Le Portugal a été mon terrain d’atterrissage — et quelle atterrissage ! Après 10 ans d’expatriation dans des pays dont je parlais la langue (Oh oui, ça fait toute la différence !), je pensais que je savais ce que « s’adapater » voulait dire. Le Portugal m’a fait redescendre de mon piédestal.
Dix ans à naviguer entre le NIF, l’AIMA, le solicitador et le fameux « amanhã »… Autant de murs culturels et administratifs que j’ai fini par apprivoiser, et qui m’ont donné une idée : si les expats francophones et anglophones galèrent autant au Portugal, qu’est-ce qui se passe en Espagne ? En Italie ? En Allemagne ? Aux Pays-Bas ou en Autriche ? Le même chaos, les mêmes questions sur les réseaux sociaux, les mêmes dentistes introuvables. Alors pros4expats s’étend. Même esprit, même annuaire, même promesse — juste un autre pays.

Portugal has been my landing pad — and what a landing!
After ten years as an expat in countries where I actually spoke the language (And, yes, it makes ALL the difference), I thought I knew what « adapting » meant. Portugal made me step down from my pedestal.
The NIF, the AIMA, the solicitador, the legendary « amanhã »… ten years of cultural and administrative walls I eventually learned to navigate — and that gave me an idea: if French and English-speaking expats struggle this much in Portugal, what’s happening in Spain? In Italy? In Germany? In the Netherlands or in Austria ?
The same chaos, the same desperate posts on social media, the same impossible-to-find dentists. So pros4expats is expanding. Same spirit, same directory, same promise — just a different country.

Bom Dia… Boa Tarde… Boa Noite !
Eh oui, ça change pile à 12h et à 18h (selon d’où vous venez, ça a du sens.. ou pas du tout 😄)
Et s’il n’y avait que quelques expressions auxquelles on s’habitue vite mais qu’on écorche souvent quand même !
Tout peut paraître “dantesque“ quand on ne parle pas le Portugais… ou pas assez couramment.
Française et Canadienne, résidente permanente au Portugal depuis plus de 10 ans, je vois se poser les mêmes questions, encore et encore, sur les réseaux sociaux et autour de moi :
– Quelqu’un connaît un dentiste qui peut me prendre en urgence…et qui parle français ?
– Je cherche un notaire qui gère les successions pour un Américain résidant au Portugal… et qui parle anglais
– J’ai besoin d’un électricien avant la semaine prochaine… il faut qu’il parle français ou anglais
On m’a déjà répondu, un peu vertement : « Vous n’avez qu’à apprendre le portugais ! »… c’est du vécu !
Ils ne sont pas majoritaires. Ils sont souvent tout simplement désolés de ne pas pouvoir vous répondre.
Parce que les Portugais sont des gens adorables et hyper serviables…. mais qui parlent une langue terriblement difficile à maîtriser.
Alors, comment répondre à ça ?
J’ai cherché, mais je n’ai pas trouvé…
L’annuaire parfait qui regrouperait les professionnels dont on peut avoir besoin … et qui parlent français, anglais (ou les deux) ! … où qu’ils se trouvent au Portugal.
Ceux qu’on peut contacter directement, sans traducteur internet interposé.
Je ne l’ai pas trouvé…
Alors je l’ai créé.

Mais ce n’est pas tout…
Les métiers et spécialités portugais, même quand ils ont une traduction « officielle », ne correspondent pas toujours à ce qu’on imagine.
Ceux que j’ai été amenée à connaître sont :
– l’ingénieur civil (là où je pensais qu’il suffisait d’un architecte)
– et le solicitador (quand je pensais que l’avocat faisait l’affaire).
Alors nous avons créé la section “Les choses à savoir” dans la page No Stress.
Un petite aide-mémoire « 100 % expats » pour savoir exactement qui appeler selon le besoin, sans tourner en rond pendant des semaines.
Ce n’est évidemment pas un document juridique (nous ne sommes pas juristes !) C’est juste pour sortir du brouillard plus vite et éviter de payer le mauvais professionnel pour la mauvaise mission. Vous verrez, ça change la vie.

Yes, it switches exactly at noon and 6 pm sharp (depending on where you’re from, that makes total sense… or none at all 😄)
If only it were just a few funny expressions we quickly get used to (and still butcher most of the time!). When you don’t speak Portuguese, or not well enough, everything can feel downright overwhelming.
French and Canadian (not French Canadian), permanent resident in Portugal for over 10 years, I keep seeing the same questions pop up again and again on social media and among friends:
– Does anyone know a dentist who speaks French and can see me in emergency?
-I need a notary who handles successions for an American living in Portugal… and speaks English.
– I’m looking for an electrician before next week – he absolutely has to speak French or English.
I’ve been told, rather sharply: “Just learn Portuguese!” …true story!
Thankfully they’re not the majority. Most Portuguese people feel genuinely sorry they can’t help because they don’t speak our language.
Because the Portuguese are lovely, warm, and always ready to help… but their language is a nightmare to master.
So, how do we fix that?
I looked for the perfect directory: the one that would list all the professionals we actually need, who speak French, English (or both), anywhere in Portugal, and that we can contact directly without Google Translate and endless back-and-forth.
I couldn’t find it…
So I built it.

But there’s more…
Job titles in Portugal, even when they have an “official” translation, don’t always mean what we think they mean.
Two classics I learned the hard way:
– I thought an architect was enough for council paperwork → turns out you often need a civil engineer.
– I thought a lawyer (advogado) could do everything → sometimes you actually need a solicitor (solicitador).
That’s why we created the section “Things to know” in the No Stress page. A little 100 % expat cheat-sheet so you know exactly who to call for what, without wasting months going around in circles for six months.
Of course it’s not a legal document (we’re not lawyers!), it’s just here to get you out of the fog faster and avoid paying the wrong professional for the wrong job.
Trust me, it’s life-changing.
